Chapter Eleven: Fight

Malia sat in the middle, Jaden to her right. He closed the door, and the man merged onto the road.

“So, what are you two goin’ to Winslow for?” he asked.

“Train station,” said Malia.

The man nodded. They rode in silence for several minutes.

“I gotta fill her up,” he told them, pulling over at a gas station—one of the last buildings on the outskirts of town. He stopped next to one of the pumps and got out.

“Oh, good—they’ve got a convenience store,” said Jaden. “Give me some of the money—I’m gonna go in and get some food.”

“We just ate!”

“Yeah, but it’s a long ride to Winslow,” he said. “Come on, fork it over!”

Malia handed him a ten. Jaden got out of the truck and ran into the store.

Moments later, the man got back in the truck and started the engine.

“That was fast,” Malia commented; she hadn’t even seen him pump the gas.

The man put the truck into gear and pulled up to the road.

“Wait—my brother went inside to get some food,” Malia said.

“We don’t need him,” the man said, patting her on the knee. “You and me can have a little fun now.”

He turned onto the road and accelerated hard. Malia was scared but felt confident she could handle this.

“What are you doing?!” she said, scooting over to the passenger-side door. “We have to go back for my brother!”

The man only grinned at her.

“Stop the car now!”

“Be patient, little lady,” he said. “My place is just a few minutes away.”

“Malia, where the hell did you go?” Jaden said in her mind.

“This creep drove off with me!”

“What the hell?”

“If you don’t pull over right now, I’m calling the police!” she said out loud.

“No, you’re not,” he said. “You ain’t got a cell phone. And besides, the police don’t take too kindly to hitchhiking in these parts.”

Malia had enough. She grabbed her backpack, opened the door, and launched herself into the air. As she left, she heard the man swearing at her. She set herself down on the shoulder; the truck’s tires screeched as the man pulled over. He got out of his vehicle and moved in her direction.

“Get back here, you little bitch,” he called out to her.

Malia strode toward him.

“Leave me alone, or you’re going to regret it,” she said.

“Oh, we’ll see about that,” he said with a chuckle.

Reaching out with her mind, Malia flung him into the back of his truck. The man slammed into the vehicle and fell to the ground.

“How the hell did you do that?” he said, scrambling to his feet, fear in his eyes now.

“Get back in your truck and go home, or I’ll do worse,” she said, moving toward him, with the meanest glare she could manage.

“Alright, sweetheart,” he said, hurrying to get back in his truck. “No need to get your panties in a bunch!”

“Do not call me ‘sweetheart,’ you pervert.”

The man got into the driver’s seat, slammed the door shut, and took off down the road.

Malia watched him drive away for a minute, then turned to head back to the gas station.
